Keep Virginia Beautiful Awards $1,000 Grant to City's Big Day of Serving Manassas
City of Manassas Neighborhood Services and its community partners have been awarded a $1,000 grant by Keep Virginia Beautiful (KVB) for the Big Day of Serving Manassas, a one day, one community, one impact revitalization project in Bristoe Station neighborhood, a 40-year-old community of 550 townhomes near Ashton Ave & Confederate Trail in Manassas.
Work projects for an estimated 700 youth and adult volunteers on Saturday, May 5 include 23 backyard makeovers, raking, mulching, landscaping, litter and trash pickup, graffiti removal, sign painting, installation of playground equipment and mural painting. To further green the community, volunteers and residents will be hauling out e-waste (TVs, computers, etc.), household hazardous waste (old paint, chemicals, etc.) and excess trash and recycling. A Cinco de Mayo block party wraps up the day with food and live music at the open air pavilion in the neighborhood.
KVB's "30 grants in 30 days" program, sponsored in 2012 by Capital One and Waste Management, is designed to help worthy projects organized by communities, schools, parks, neighborhoods and civic groups throughout the commonwealth to prevent cigarette litter, prevent and recycle plastic bag litter and green and beautify communities. The City and its community partners won in the beautification and community greening category. This is the second year in a row the City of Manassas has won this award for its neighborhood projects.
