Gainesville

Gainesville is a small town in northern Virginia, in Prince William County. It has a population of about 29,000 residents, up over 20,000 in the last ten years.

This town started out as a stop for a stage coach and when the railroad came in the mid eighteen hundreds they began shipping grain, timber and cattle. Gainesville remained a major cattle shipping town into the 1960s.

Centreville and Manassas are the nearest towns with larger populations. Gainesville is very close to Manassas National Battle Park, Bull Run Regional Park and Manassas Park. Lake Manassas is just to the south.

This part of Prince William County is a golfers paradise with the Stonewall Golf Club, Prince William Golf Club, Virginia Oaks Golf Club, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club and Heritage Hunt Golf Club all close by.

Located at the intersection of highways 55 and 29, Gainesville is just south of interstate 66. Just up highway 29 is the ConwayRobinson Memorial State Forest.

Youngsters moving into the town would be attending the George E. Tyler Elementary School. The principal, Michele Salzano, promises to produce productive members of the 21st century. Pace West School is also located in Gainesville and is a regional special education school for students with serious emotional and behavioral issues. Other nearby schools are the Stonewall Jackson Sr. High School, the Linton Hall School and the All Saints School.

One of the many activities enjoyed enjoyed by Gainesville residents and visitors is bike riding the many trials through this scenic landscape. Another favorite activity is fishing at Lake Manassas.  With over 22 miles of shoreline and many varieties of fish, this is good place to picnic and enjoy the water.

Gainesville is located at 38°47'41"N 77°37'14"W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.3 square miles. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,382 people, 1,719 households, and 1,304 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 450.9 people per square mile.

There were 1,719 households out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.2% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.91.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,300, and the median income for a family was $82,627. Males had a median income of $46,934 versus $40,385 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $35,196. About 1.9% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 0.6% of those age 65 or over.

Gainesville was once a changing point for stagecoach horses on the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike. In 1852, the Manassas Gap Railroad reached the area and the stop became known as Gainesville. The town was a shipping point for grain, timber, and cattle and remained a major cattle shipping point into the early 1960s. During the American Civil War, nearby Thoroughfare Gap in the Bull Run Mountains served as a path for soldiers to reach the First and Second battles of Bull Run.
