Azalea Charities Golf Event
Azalea Charities’ three day (May 2-4, 2010) Golf Event in Prince William County, VA is attracting LPGA players and will spotlight Special Olympics and Aid for Wounded Warriors. The event will be held at the Piedmont Club in Haymarket, Virginia.
The three-day event begins on Sunday, May 2 with Special Olympics Golf Day. All area Special Olympics athletes, from Arlington to Fredericksburg, are invited to participate in the day’s clinic and golf tournament. Golf professionals from throughout the Middle Atlantic will be volunteering their time to work with John “Monty” Montgomery, Head Golf Professional at the Piedmont Club to put on this event for the athletes. Area high school golf team members volunteer their time in working with these special athletes. The golf teams will consist of a golf professional, sponsor, high school team member and a Special Olympic athlete.
Monday, May 3 will be the Azalea Classic Pro-Am Invitational, one of the top three pro-am purses in the Middle Atlantic Professional Golfers Association. Thirty-four teams, each made up of one golf professional and three amateurs will be playing for an estimated purse of $25K (professionals) and prizes (amateurs). Chip Sullivan, John Stone, Rick Schuller, Cary Sciorra, Eric Cobb and Wayne Defrancesco are some of the well known winners and players of the Azalea Classic.
Tuesday, May 4 will host 10 LPGA players and 30 amateurs in an LPGA Players Clinic and Pro-Am Invitational. The LPGA Players will be playing for a $37K purse in this event. “A great welcome is being planned for the LPGA players with hopes this will be another step closer to bringing a bigger event in 2011-12,” says Scott Abell, Committee Co-Chair (along with Jim Luibl) and former director of the Kemper Open Golf Tournament at Avenel in Potomac, MD. Azalea Charities Chairman and Founder Frank Lasch is working with local LPGA player Kris Tschetter, who will serve as Honorary Chairperson of the LPGA Players event.
Lasch is also working with the Greater Washington Sports Charities (GWSC, Inc.) a newly formed Virginia-based charity with the interest of bringing an LPGA Tour event to the Greater Washington area in 2011. Club Corp, owner of the Piedmont Club is behind GWSC to bring this event to the Piedmont Club.
